Okay, I need help once more.... I totally didn't think about the fact that I would need a few days to take it to a dry cleaner to have the wrinkes ironed out.... any ideas on how to do this without ruining the velveteen??? |

So... this is supposed to be a sewing blog, and I have not made a post in over a year (which is total crap because I have sewn a lot over the past year)! First, a question... then, an update about my current project.
So, I am making a Gothic Victorian dress for Halloween, nothing like the last minute, and I am stuck on 2 parts, both of which involve gathering. First off, the skirt. It is about 2 1/2 times larger around than my actual waist in order to allow for gathering... what is an easy or relatively easy way to gather so that they are not all spastic and in random places, and close to the same size? Similarly, the sleeves will have gathered lace around the cuffs, how can I do this? Please keep in mind that I like to tackle huge projects that my actual abilities / knowledge may not be up to par with, so please use idiot language. :-)
Wheee, so the dress itself is going to be awesome, assuming I get it finished in the next few days. I started a few weeks ago, but things always seem to get in my way, or I am lazy, and it is not completed yet. But, the jacket and skirt are black velveteen, the jacket has lace around the collar and sleeves and antique looking brushed silver buttons, with a satin exposed lining. Tis beautiful. I will post pictures when it is finished. All that needs doing is the above mentioned gathering, putting the waistband in the skirt, and finishing sewing on the buttons. |

Mara is done!
Pictures
They are a little dark and blurry because I felt the need to have a neon blue lightsaber lit up... but I think you get the idea. |

Sorry for the long break between posts, but I haven't had a whole lot of time for costuming recently. But, tonight I finished David's birthday present... an authentic Anakin Skywalker belt! I kept it as close as possible while working within a reasonable budget. All that said, it still cost me about $80 for the belt alone. I'm damn proud of it. Pictures to come soon... I'm really wishing I had a digital camera right about now.
I haven't started the rest of his Anakin costume yet... but I've got most of the fabric (everything but the wool for the robe) and some ideas about how I want to cut it. Just need to sit him down for a fitting and then it can really get going. I may have seen him naked for a year now, but I still don't know the distance from his shoulder to his wrist. Call me crazy. :-)
As for my other projects.... Mara Jade is coming along nicely. I finished the shoulder straps and belt - version 1 was done awhile ago, but I went and bought real leather and redid the whole thing and it looks a thousand times better. The only thing standing in the way of Mara completion is some slight alterations to the body suit. Hopefully I can finish that and get my 501st designation before DC. That would be ideal. Sith Lord, here I come.
Black Corset Padme is almost finished as well. Need to find something to make the silver headband out of, and a wig because my hair is nowhere near that long. Outside of that, she's finished as well.
Lake Padme is further off... still looking for the right kind of silk for a decent price. As much as I'd love to drop $100 in fabric alone..... so if anyone knows of a good place to get real silk at a decent price, please let me know.
Also, I got the materials to make Peasant Padme as well. As long as I'm going balls to the wall Star Wars I might as well do it all out. This is still all in the planning stage, but I've got a lot of the stuff already.
It just occured to me that I'd better get sewing if I want all of this done by the middle of August! |

Moving right along... :-)
Mara: I finished riveting the belt and sholder straps. The only thing left to do with those parts is to find 2 boy-scout style belt buckles and put them on the sholders in the front. Shouldn't be too hard, just need to find the time to go get them. I got the fabric for her cape and a pattern for it as well. I'm going with a cream colored linen. I'm going to make a clasp for it since I can't find one that I like. I also need to finish cutting out the body suit and sew it. But, I did get the knee pads from Play it Again sports and colored the rivets black as well as the logo. I'm going to use my Anakin lightsaber, as Luke does eventually give it to her.
Padme Black Corset Gown: This one is the most exciting. I finally found a good pattern to use for the top... Simplicity 4145. Thank god the fabric store near here is going out of business and everything is 60% off. I can't tell you how much that has helped. Anyways, I just finished the outer corset! I'm pleased with it. I didn't bone this one, since the undercorset is fully boned and should give me the shape I need - this one is more for show. I also got a pattern for the gloves which shouldn't be too difficult to alter. After that, all that needs to be done is the rest of the beading on the neckpiece. Such a pain in the ass I can't get motivated for it.
Padme Lake Gown: I have everything but the silk. I can't bring myself to spend the $100 it's going to take just yet. If anyone knows of a good place to get real silk, please let me know.
Cara-Mord Sith: I don't know if I'm going to have this one done this year, but I'm buying the things I need as I see them on sale. I found the perfect shade of red vinyl, so I got that, and some yellow fabric paint to do the design on her stomach. I'm totally stoked about making her Agiel, but I want to hold off until I cut the pattern out of the vinyl before I make it, since it can be made from scraps. My friend Lucy's mom is a clothing designer, so I told her what I was looking for and she's going to make me a custom pattern based on my designs and ideas. I'm totally thrilled that she's doing it for me - it should be awesome. Now to con someone into being my Lord Rahl... :-) |

| Back to LJ... but with a new purpose |
[Apr. 9th, 2007|07:38 pm] |
Hey everyone... It's been almost a year since my last LJ post. Miss me? I've kept up reading with all of your posts here, even though I never post myself. But, that's about to change.....
I am going to start using LJ as my costuming blog. So, expect to see lots of posts about costumes in the works. My regular blog will remain at myspace for now, so if you want to catch up on the non-costume related aspects of my life, continue to go there. I'll be honest and say that I'm only going to update this as there are major developments in costumes, so don't expect a crap-load of posts. And, if you don't wish to read about it because you think costuming is for uber dorks, which it is, then please disregard any of my rantings here.
Moving on, first update in costume land!
Mokey Fraggle: My Mokey is all but done... I need to figure out how to make the edges of her cloak roll up into tubes but not have an obvious hemline... how to do this, I'm not sure. Still working on that part. Suggestions welcome. And, I have to find a necklace as well. Outside of that, all done. I think I'm going to wear my birkinstocks, as they are the most fraggle-like shoes I can think of. Since they don't ever wear socks or shoes (so why Boober is a sock washer I have no idea) and I can't go barefoot I think that's the best alternative.
Padme's Black Corset Dress (Episode II): Skirt and undercorset are finished. The necklace is mostly done, just need to sew the beads that go around the collar itself. The cirlce and the strands that hang down are already completed. Then, I'll have to figure out a way to make the over-corset without lacing up the back... much complications. If anyone has a good pattern for it or some ideas on how to get around not lacing it, please let me know. (ie, Chris, this means you :-) )
Other costumes in the very early planning stages (ie, gathering materials): Padme's Lake Gown (also called the Rainbow Dress) Episode II Mara Jade - Star Wars books |

Seeing as how I no longer go to UNCA, and it was simply time for a change, I've created a new journal.
